Abstract Introduction Conclusions References Tables Figures Back Close Full Screen / Esc Abstract A regional ocean general circulation model of the Mediterranean is used to study the climate of the last glacial maximum. The atmospheric forcing for these simulations has been derived from simulations with an atmospheric general circulation model, which in turn was forced with surface conditions from a coarse resolution earth system model. 5 The model is successful in reproducing the general patterns of reconstructed sea surface temperature anomalies with the strongest cooling in summer in the northwestern Mediterranean and weak cooling in the Levantine, although the model underestimates the extent of the summer cooling in the western Mediterranean. However, there is a strong vertical gradient associated with this pattern of summer cooling, which makes 10 the comparison with reconstructions nontrivial. The exchange with the Atlantic is decreased to roughly one half of its present value, which can be explained by the shallower Strait of Gibraltar as a consequence of lower global sea level. This reduced exchange causes a strong increase of the salinity in the Mediterranean in spite of reduced net evaporation.

How cold was Europe at the Last Glacial Maximum? A synthesis of the progress achieved since the first PMIP model-data comparison

The Last Glacial Maximum has been one of the first foci of the Paleoclimate Modelling Intercomparison Project (PMIP). During its first phase, the results of 17 atmosphere general circulation models were compared to paleoclimate reconstructions. One of the largest discrepancies in the simulations was the systematic underestimation, by at least 10C, of the winter cooling over Europe and the Medit...

Evaluation of LGM SST Reconstructions through their Influence on South American Climate

The consistency of land-based and ocean-based Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) proxy evidence on and near South America is evaluated by utilizing a regional climate model (RCM). The relatively high resolution of the RCM brings model output closer to the spatial scales of the geological reconstructions. This is important because proxy sites only a few ten’s of kilometers apart can yield markedly diffe...

The effect of ocean dynamics in a coupled GCM simulation of the Last Glacial Maximum

General circulation models (GCMs) of the climate system are powerful tools for understanding and predicting climate and climate change. The last glacial maximum (LGM) provides an extreme test of the model’s ability to simulate a change of climate, and allows us to increase our understanding of mechanisms of climate change. We have used a coupled high resolution ocean–atmosphere GCM (HadCM3) to ...

Quantifying the Effects of Lower Sea Level on Tropical Pacific Climate during the Last Glacial Maximum

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I wish to thank my research advisor and co-advisor, Dr. Kim Cobb and Dr. Emanuele DiLorenzo. They have put a tremendous number of hours into this project while teaching me that conducting research is challenging, tiring, but more importantly, fun and inspiring. I also wish to thank Dr. Yen, both who introduced me to the world of academia. Working in both of ...

How cold were the tropics and subtropics at the Last Glacial Maximum?

The spatial pattern and magnitude of tropical and subtropical sea surface temperatures (SSTs) at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) have been a major challenge for many years. The range of the LGM tropical and subtropical cooling remains a major source of uncertainties for our understanding of the LGM climate. The global SST reconstruction for the LGM is an important ocean surface boundary conditio...
